Ads Everywhere
Quantity, is NOT a good thing when it comes to advertisements on your blog! The REAL key, if you go this route, is a small amount of HYPER focused advertisements that speak directly to your niche. ( and not general ads or Google ads, which will NOT make you much, unless your traffic numbers are through the roof!)
No real audience
This is the biggest reason why blogs fail - and to be honest, is not a huge surprise. Most people are blogging about themselves - their stories, their families, their problems and their lives. Of course this is fine, and arguably, a GREAT reason to start a blog if you have the creative writing itch. It is NOT however, a gateway to the green - EVEN if you are an amazingly entertaining writer. Simply stated, a small, HYPER focused niche blog on a well researched topic will ALWAYS out pull an entertaining site without a central focus. (other than YOUR story..:-)
Bad Bones
By this I mean a bad foundation. You need to be collecting names on your blog - and emailing offers. You need to be promoting your RSS feed, running contests, giveaways, offering pdf white papers with links that are income generating and much MORE on every site you plan on monetizing. Simply writing good content, in a SEA of similar stuff is simply NOT enough anymore to keep readers (and their wallets) coming back for more
